How to Concentrate on Your Studying: 3 Tips

If you are looking for advice on how to focus on your study, you are in the right place. In this article, we will see together how to achieve this state of mind even when it seems to you that it is impossible!

You are sitting at your desk, all beautifully organized, the book in front of you, the highlighter in your hand, and the best of intentions, but… nothing to do, today is not really the day.

You get up every five minutes to attend to a sudden business that can’t wait; read two lines and then look at Facebook by inertia; at the end of the chapter you think about it for a moment and you realize that you do not remember absolutely anything of what you have read!

Before talking to you about the techniques to be adopted to avoid these situations, I would like to remind you of an important aspect: do not seek perfection! The winner is the one who “consistently” and not “always” manages to:

  • stay focused
  • study methodically
  • take the exams he has scheduled.

So, when that “definitely not” day happens to you, don’t want too much of it and rather switch off and do something else! The important thing is that on 100 days of study you are able to work well at least 80-85% of the days.

Okay, before moving on to my tips on how to focus on studying, let’s see why this focus is lacking.

The Causes of the Lack of Concentration

There can be so many causes, let’s see which are the most frequent:

  • Being distracted constantly: and this may be due to the TV on, the people in the room who keep talking, the cell phone ringing, etc.
  • Studying in an unsuitable environment: perhaps there is too much noise, the lighting is poor, the workstation is uncomfortable…
  • Being in Multitasking mode: Maybe you try to do several things at the same time like studying and texting at the same time
  • Disinterest in the subject: Maybe you might be in a situation where you would really do anything but study that subject
  • Do not plan the study: without a timetable you find yourself not having clear what to do and when to do it, ending up thinking about how to study and not… to study!
  • Other thoughts in your mind: maybe you start thinking about what you will do over the weekend, what you did two months ago… and you can’t focus

Well, now that we have seen what are the possible causes that undermine your concentration, let’s move on to the most interesting part, that is the advice!

1. Parts with the Right Charge of Motivation

Often the lack of concentration is due to a lack of motivation during your study days (in short, you do not have a basic “why study” to push you).

When this happens, maybe because you don’t like the subject or because you don’t want to study, you apply yourself only with your body (because physically you are on the books) but with your head, you are somewhere else.

If you find yourself in this situation, then the first thing you can do is “focus” on rekindling the motivation. I’ve created a video that explains some super effective strategies for doing this. To have it click here, leave your name and your email and you will receive it along with other useful resources to improve your study method).

2. Eliminate Distractions

Try to block or limit all those little things that don’t allow you to focus properly:

start by silencing cell phone notifications (most distractions come from here)

Tell the people who live with you that you need to focus and that you won’t be available for a while

Write down any thoughts that distract you from studying on a piece of paper. In this way, you calm your mind, signaling that you cannot deal with these “problems” now, but you will do it later.

If it is not strictly necessary for your study, I also advise you to disconnect from the internet, because it is very easy to switch from research on the seven kings of Rome to videos of kittens playing with the wool ball.

3. Learn to Study in the Right Environment

Once the motivation is rekindled, the next step is to learn to study in the right place.

The outside environment has a lot of influence on you and it’s easy to get distracted if you’re not in the right place to study. Some useful tips you can follow are:

  • study in a place where no one can disturb you, for example in the library or in the study room of the university;
  • Make sure there is good lighting in the room, this way your eyes won’t be too tired;
  • put away your mobile phone and/or close the social network pages (unless you are using apps to study)
  • try to have other people close to you who study seriously (since by nature we tend to do the same things done by the people around us, it is better to be “inspired” to study)
  • prepare all the study material in advance, so you will avoid getting up every 3 × 2 and losing concentration;

See if studying with music helps you. For example, you can listen to ambient, binaural, or instrumental music, the important thing is that it does not involve you too much to the point of deviating from the study (and start singing).

Conclusion

Over time you will understand better and better the environmental factors that disturb you while you study and how to eliminate them with creative solutions. This goes for all the tips, as you apply them, you will see what’s works best for you.

This might even extend to getting assistance from an essay helper just to boost your studying efforts. Remember that the most important thing is trying to improve yourself and looking for better options for doing things.
