How To Pack Furniture When Moving

Moving furniture may be necessary when you locally change your residence, office location, or if you have to move out of town for the summer. Is it necessary to pack it and how to do it correctly? Let’s look into it with professional movers from A Plus Moving Group.

Packing Materials

We never tire of repeating: Proper packing is the guarantor of the safety of your property! Yes, it happens that to save money people refuse full value packaging, reducing it to a minimum. For example, it can be found at office relocations, when for packing most of the cabinet furniture only stretch film is used. But we will not dwell on this option. Still, it is a violation of the technology of moving, additional risks.

For quality packing you will need:

  • air bubble film (use three-layer, it will effectively keep the property from bumps, mechanical damage, moisture, and dust)
  • cardboard sheets
  • special blankets for furniture (made of soft, non-vulnerable cloth)
  • protective profiles (often sold by the meter)
  • adhesive tape
  • marker
  • stickers.

Cabinet furniture

Where to start packing? We recommend that you start by figuring out if disassembly is necessary. A disassembled boards cabinet is easier to carry, transport, and pack. In addition, often large items – closets, beds – simply can not be taken out of the apartment because of the size.

The second point, be sure to free furniture from things before packing. Even a standard-sized chest of drawers, filled with textiles, will be quite heavy. And this will not only complicate its transportation but also can cause damage during the move.

So, the general order of work is as follows:

  1. If there is a need – disassemble the furniture.
  2. Dismantle all removable parts like handles, legs, wheels.
  3. Remove shelves and pack them separately.
  4. If there are pull-out parts/drawers or doors, secure them with paper tape. For large items with heavy doors, use 2-3 round layers of crepe.
  5. Wrap the entire case with a layer of air bubble wrap.
  6. Protect the bottom and top over the film with cardboard – it is best to use heavy triple-layer corrugated cardboard for this. You can buy a sheet or cut a ready-made box. If the furniture has legs, but they are not removable – then use 2 additional layers of cardboard on the bottom, so you increase the rigidity of the package.
  7. Put all the fittings together (you can build a bubble wrap package), seal it, attach it to one of the sides. This way nothing gets lost.
  8. Be sure to sign all the parts, if you disassemble the furniture! When labeling, you can indicate not only the item and part number but also the room. For example, “Living room, table, part 1”.
  9. If you still have diagrams of furniture assembly and disassembly, put them in transparent bags and tape them to the furniture over the wrapping film. That way, after you move into your new place, you won’t have to search in the turmoil to find where they were packed.

Upholstered Furniture

In general, the algorithm of action is about the same:

  1. Disassemble into parts, remove the armrests, unscrew the linen drawers.
  2. For reclining sofas, tie or otherwise disarm the folding mechanism. So that when you move it suddenly did not work.
  3. Wrap each piece of bubble wrap.
  4. Pack all removable elements of upholstered furniture separately.
  5. If there are any decorative elements (wooden panels, fronts, balustrades) – protect them with cardboard. Glue it over the film with tape.
  6. Secure the legs with a special profile or cardboard.
  7. As with cabinet furniture, attach the fittings to the end part of one of the main elements. Sign the place of attachment: “hardware”.
  8. Pay particular attention to furniture made of natural leather. It may be advisable to treat such sofas with a special spray before transporting them.

Glass Furniture Pieces

Many models of furniture have glass and mirror parts or doors. These items should be packaged separately.

  1. Dismantle items with glass – it is better to pack them separately.
  2. First, wrap the entire piece in a couple of layers of bubble wrap.
  3. Then use cardboard – it should completely cover the surface of the item. Secure it with tape.
  4. Polyethylene foam protective profiles can be used to further protect the ribs and corners from chipping. They cushion well and can protect against unexpected bumps and jolts in transit.
  5. Labeling is a must. Don’t be lazy, sign the package large and legibly on the front side: “Glass”, “Fragile” or the “shot glass” icon.

Important Details

In addition to packaging, there are several other things to consider for a successful move:

Consider protecting not only the furniture itself but also the finishes of the room. Especially if you are moving into a new apartment, office, or house where repairs have just been completed. All doorways, thresholds, narrow corridors, sharp turns – places of special risk.

Packaging efforts will be for naught if you put the property at unnecessary risk and transport it in a car with a tent. Remember, for the transportation of furniture are strictly suitable cars with a metal van!

Of course, there are exceptions to all the rules. The disassembly and packing of simple shelving can handle almost anyone. But if you have to transport built-in, expensive, furniture with a delicate finish, heavy, or antique – it is better to contact professionals. Do not take risks, because the restoration of a single item can cost more than the entire shipment.
