For his personal life, it is understood that Kirk was married to actress Diana Dill from 1943 until 1951 — that they had two kids, actor Michael Douglas and producer Joel Douglas. Later on, he met producer Anne Buydens while living in Paris, and they had been married in 1954. They’ve been together for over 60 years and have two kids, one of whom was producer Peter Douglas.

In an autobiography, he said that during his youth, he tried to forget that he was a Jew. Finally, he returned to his Jewish roots after a near-death experience in 1991, he also strove to re-discover his sanity. He later said that he took him a long time to learn you don’t need to be a rabbi to be a Jew.
