6 Old Movies About Student Life That Are Still Relevant Today

Student life has always been an encouraging topic for filmmakers. There is no shortage of drama, inspiration, struggle, and success in these plots. And when done right, it appeals to all ranges of the audience as well.

There is a reason why, when nostalgia strikes, we all turn to our favorite college movies to reminisce. In fact, many of these movies have aged well as wine, still offering valuable life lessons to generations of students. If you are an essay writer, you will have no trouble finding the setting for a motivational term paper in the school hallways. In this article, we look at some iconic films that can still appeal to the young audience.

1. The Paper Chase, 1973

This bright and engaging classic movie covers the life of a first-year Harvard law student James Hart and his relationship with his professor. We are all familiar with professors like Kingsfield Jr, who dictates around and inspires total dread among all his students. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate intelligence, but he rarely shows his affection.

Yet, his study group is one of the most coveted places to be in, and Hart is invited as well. He also manages to start a relationship with Kingsfield’s daughter though not knowing who she was. As the film progresses, the plot unfolds all the complications of student life, the rapport between characters, and battles to stay motivated. The movie is a loyal adaptation of the novel and is nothing but inspiring, to say the least.

2. The Breakfast Club, 1985

This cult classic never fails to put a smile on the face of the viewers. For those who haven’t seen the movie, the plot revolves around five students who spend eight hours together in the school library for detention on a Saturday. Each student has their own baggage and personalities that clash with the others. But by the end of the day, the boundaries that separate them become blurry, and they gain a new perspective towards life and friendship.

Without the cliche musicals, makeovers, and party scenes, the movie captures the essence of student life and leaves you with thought-provoking messages.

3. Dead Poets Society, 1989

This remarkable film conveys that education goes further beyond what is taught in books. In the setting of a boys boarding school, the movie captures events following a new English teacher’s joining. Portrayed by Robin Williams, the teacher John Keatings breaks all the school’s prevailing norms and ideas of teaching poetry. He replaces the abnormally strict classroom set up with an environment that nurtures creativity, dreams, and passion for life.

Not so surprisingly, the students take a liking to the professor until a tragedy strikes one of the students, leading to suicide. Though real life takes over, the students do not fail to show their love and respect for the teacher. The climax where the students stand on their desks reciting “O Captain! My Captain!” is considered one of the most classic scenes in movie history.

4. Good Will Hunting, 1997

With nine Academy Award nominations and winning two of them, Good Will Hunting continues to be deemed a masterpiece among movies. Released in 1997, the film has a 20-year old genius as its protagonist. The plot follows his life when he is forced to take counseling and pursue advanced mathematics with a professor. Though focused on the college-aged boy, the movie is all about self-development and how Will Hunting evolves as a person.

The storyline might be predictable, but it offers great insight into the struggles many youngsters face these days when it comes to trust, faith, and love. It is the story of a young boy and his mentor and how their relationship influences both of them to be their best versions.

5. Mona Losa Smile, 2003

This movie draws many parallels with the Dead Poets Society. Katherine Watson, played by Julia Roberts, takes up a teaching post at a conservative Wellesley Women’s College. She, an open-minded, modern female who advocates for women’s rights, finds the schools and students’ traditional mindset quite challenging. However, she is taken aback when one of her most gifted pupils prioritizes getting married and taking care of the house instead of pursuing higher education.

Miss Watson sets out to change the perspective and open a new pathway for her students. There are a few heartwarming scenes, room for reflection as well as the strength of friendships. In any era, this female-oriented film with a stunning cast will always stand out.

6. The Social Network, 2010

Though relatively new, the Social Network is still a decade old now. And in this social media age, there might be nothing better than the life story of Mark Zuckerberg to get you motivated in your student life. Though he dropped out, Zuckerberg developed Facebook with his friends from his Harvard medical school dorm room. The movie takes us through his journey from a college student to being a multi-millionaire. The Social Network gives the message all it takes a good idea and willpower to turn your dream into reality.

Wrapping Up

And these films have managed to captivate the audience through brilliant performances, powerful messages, and an evergreen glory. So add these to the watch list and set this aside for a day when you have time to invest in a movie.
